Western Pop

A groundbreaking new exhibition at the Booth Western Art Museum
examines Andy Warhol’s Western works.

H

aving sat through many of Andy
Warhol’s lengthy films in the 1960s
it was a relief to discover his colorful
silkscreen prints of Marilyn Monroe, Mick
Jagger and other A-list celebrities later in the
decade and into the ’70s and ’80s. I didn’t

discover one of his most significant groups
of screenprints until many years later. His
Cowboys and Indians series was published in
1986, just months before his death. One of the
most unexplored aspects of his career, Warhol’s
love for the West is evident in the series and is

now the centerpiece of a scholarly exhibition,
Warhol and the West.
Seth Hopkins, executive director of the
Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville,
Georgia, comments, “Even ardent fans of
American artist, director and producer Andy
