Teddy in Texas


A sculpture of Theodore Roosevelt


by Alexander Phimister Proctor is now


on view in San Antoni.

n May the Briscoe Western
Art Museum announced the
temporary installation of a
bronze monument of President
Theodore Roosevelt in San
Antonio, Texas. The bronze,
showing “Teddy” Roosevelt
seated on a horse, was created
by prominent Western sculptor
Alexander Phimister Proctor.
The work was installed near the
historic Menger Hotel pending its
permanent installation as part of
the Alamo Sculpture Trail, a series
of 14 statues that link the Alamo
to the Briscoe.
The Proctor piece, created
from the original 1922 mold, was
donated by Texas businessman
and advocate of the arts Jack
Guenther. “I am pleased to
see the Alamo Sculpture Trail
near completion with today’s
installment of the Teddy Roosevelt
statue,” said Guenther at the
installation. “These key fi gures
of our city and nation’s history
deserve to be prominently
displayed throughout Downtown
San Antonio and at Alamo Plaza.”
Guenther, who originally
proposed the sculpture trail to
the city, continues: “Teddy is
being installed in a temporary
location in front of the Menger
Hotel pending his installation
in the completed Alamo Plaza.

will lead to the Briscoe
Western Art Museum.”
Roosevelt, who was
a conservationist and a
Rough Rider with the
1 stst United States Volunteer
Cavalry, was then and
remains today a popular
Western subject
whose adventures on
horseback have been
frequently documented in
paint and bronze. The Rough
Riders trained in San Antonio,
and strategized during the
Spanish-American War at the
Menger Hotel.
