A

n award-winning work by
prominent watercolor artist
Dean Mitchell is now
in the permanent collection at
the Huntsville Museum of Art in
Hunstville, Alabama.
The work is Quincy Plant Worker,
a watercolor on paper from 2011.
It features a single figure in portrait
with a hat that drenches his face in a
dramatic shadow. “The plant worker
emerges from a ghost-like doorway
with a tool in one hand and cigarette
in another, his eyes engages the
viewer with uncertainty,” the artist
says. “What happens to my American
dream? What will happen now that
no one is in need of my plant working
skills? The era of technology and
machine has changed the power of
the working class all over the world.”
Mitchell, whose Western and
contemporary oils and watercolors
are collected around the country, is
a staple at many important Western
museum shows, especially for his
watercolors that often win awards.
The Florida-based artist has shown
work before at the Huntsville
Museum of Art, including in 2015
when he was the featured artist at
the 24th annual museum gala.
Quincy Plant Worker was acquired
by purchase in honor of Anne Pollard,
with funds provided by the Dr. John
Rison Jones Jr. Acquisition Fund
and the Susy and Robert Thurber
Acquisition Fund. The piece is
on view now. For more information
