finished surface, he emulates their textures and
weathered surfaces.  
Peter Poskas has returned often to the Hipp
Farm in rural Connecticut. 
“I like to return to the same farms,” he says,
“because I can anticipate what’s going on with
the change in seasons, but I also anticipate
being surprised. The weather and light are
always a great mystery and a great treasure
you find when you return to a place. You see
the farms morph over the years—buildings fall


down, they’re rebuilt, they’re painted different
colors.” 
The farm has attracted a myriad of artists
over the years, but Poskas has developed
an intimate knowledge and awareness of its
subtleties.
In Winter Morning, Hipp Farm, it’s not yet
mud season and the cows forage for grass
among the thin layer of snow. Poskas finds
the poetry in a farm landscape, the record of
generations of hard-working farmers.
He says, “I seldom paint people in my

paintings, but their stamp is always on the
landscape.”
Dan Young grew up and lives in Colorado
where he has always been an outdoorsman,
immersing himself in the landscape. He paints
en plein air to capture the fleeting intimacy of
a scene and returns to his studio to work on
larger paintings. He declares that his paintings
are “not about the detail...I try to capture the
feel of that scene. The simpler I can say that
the stronger it’s going to be in the painting.”
