IGK First Class Charcoal Detox
Dry Shampoo (from £10; Space
NK) is seriously heavy-duty, made
with seven cleansing powders –
including charcoal, although it’s
colourless – which absorb excess
oil and leave a fresh fragrance.

KNOTS
Regular dips in chlorinated or
salt water can turn normally
manageable hair into ratty, tangled
tendrils. Aussie 48HR Scent-
sational Smooth Conditioning
Mist (£9.99; Boots) makes short
work of knots, but its real USP is
its fragrance – irresistibly sweet
and fruity, it hits you from just
lifting off the lid. It’s encapsulated,
meaning that a little more is
released every time you brush,
swish or flick your hair.

LESS-THAN PERFECT WAVES
After bouncy, beachy, Gisele-esque
waves but find the end result often
looks more like straggly seaweed?
The trick is to not overload your
hair with products, keeping curls
touchably soft rather than crispy.
Bumble and Bumble, the
expert in beach-babe style,
has just launched Surf
Styling Leave In (£23;
bumbleandbumble.co.uk),
a gel-cream that
conditions, controls frizz,
gives light
hold and
provides UV
protection.

BRASSY BLONDE
I’m always amazed by how much
more soft and manageable my
hair is – and how much fresher my
colour looks – when I wash it on
holiday. This has, over the years,
led me to become increasingly
more suspicious about what
comes out of the tap in my London
home. Color Wow’s clever new
pre-wash spray, Dream Filter
(£24; colorwowhair.com), gently
draws colour-dulling minerals and
metals found in water (chlorine
included) off like a magnet, to
reveal a bright, clean colour when
it’s washed off.

FADING COLOUR
For anyone who adds colour
to their hair, it may be worth
switching to specific colour-caring
products during the sunnier
months, as UV rays – plus washing
more frequently – can cause it to
fade quicker than usual. Briogeo
Color Me Brilliant Mushroom +
Bamboo Color Protect Shampoo

(£26; cultbeauty.co.uk) contains
hydrating oils and natural extracts
that help to lock in colour and
enhance shine.

SUN PROTECTION
Over-exposure to the sun’s rays
can also break down the proteins
in the hair, causing visible damage
and dryness. If you’re heading out
for a day of sunshine and don’t
mind a bit of product on the hair,
spritz on L’Oréal Professional
Série Expert Solar Sublime Spray
(£15.50; lookfantastic.com).
It contains aloe vera and a UV
filter that form a protective
film around each strand.

DRY ENDS
If frazzled, fraying ends are your
biggest headache, you may wish
to apply a nourishing mask to
just the bottom half your hair.
Herbal Essences bio:renew
Coconut Milk Hydrating Hair
Mask (£6; nationwide) smells
good enough to eat – like a
tropical island in a tub – and is
the brand’s most intensively
conditioning formula yet.

H

ay fever, wasps,
sunburn... I hate to
grumble, but summer
has its drawbacks. And
if your hair hasn’t been
looking its best this month, that
could be summer’s fault, too.
Here’s how to deal with some of
this season’s hair-care bugbears...

FRIZZ
“There are two main causes of
frizz: humidity and friction. Both
cause the hair cuticle to flare,”
says Lauren Trahan, senior
chemist at Living Proof. In
summer, there is a higher level of
moisture in the air, and you may
be rubbing against your pillow
more if you toss and turn during
muggy nights. Most frizz-fighting
products contain silicones, which
leave a coating on the hair that
can feel heavy, but Living Proof
Frizz Instant De-Frizzer (from £10;
livingproof.co.uk) uses a patented
lightweight molecule, instantly
smoothing styles in what feels like
nothing more than a puff of air.

GREASY ROOTS
I rarely have an issue with
too much volume; rather, the
opposite: flat, lank locks
that get greasy quicker than
normal. This is due to an
excessively sweaty head
and constantly touching
my hair, meaning I get
through more dry shampoo
in the summer months
than in the rest of the year.
