CLASSICAL MUSIC/THEATER

  1. (^) Hear The Black Clown
    Powerful music-theater.
Gerald W. Lynch Theater, July 24 to 27.
In a 1931 poem, Langston Hughes describes the
music that goes with his words: “A gay and low-
down blues ... A bugle call ... The music is like a
mournful tom-tom in the dark!” Now the com-
poser Michael Schachter has realized the score
that Hughes evoked in a polystylistic spectacle
with baritone Davóne Tines in the title role. j.d.

  2. (^) See Another Country:
    Outsider Visions
    of America
    Another lens.
Lincoln Center, August 2 to 14.
We Americans aren’t too swift at seeing ourselves
through the eyes of outsiders, which is why you
should queue up for this Film at Lincoln Center
series that samples foreign filmmakers’ perspec-
tives on this country, including a night of shorts of
black leaders in and out of government by Agnès
    Varda, Yolande du Luart, and Chris Marker;
    Antonioni’s apocalyptic Zabriskie Point; Lars
von Trier’s scabrous Dogville; and even Paul Ver-
    hoeven’s Showgirls! david edelstein

  3. (^) See Make Believe
    Party of four.
Second Stage Theater, July 30 to September 15.
Playwright Bess Wohl (Small Mouth Sounds,
Continuity) explores the collision between real
and pretend in the story of the four Conlee chil-
dren, whose game of “playing house” is no longer
a game when their parents suddenly disappear.
Thirty-two years later, the siblings are no closer to
    the truth ... s.h.

  4. (^) See A Black Lady
    Sketch Show
A new comedy series, led by black women.
    HBO, August 2.
This series is exactly what it sounds like: a sketch-
comedy show with four black female principals—
Robin Thede, Ashley Nicole Black, Gabrielle
Dennis, and Quinta Brunson. Expect cameos
from major names, including Angela Bassett,
Laverne Cox, Lil Rel Howery, and Issa Rae, an

    A resonant installation.
    Met Breuer, through August 11.
Silence is almost never silent, and each empty
room and pot focuses the vibrations all around and
hums its own distinct pitch. Using that phenom-
enon, the British artist Oliver Beer has marshaled
hollow objects from the Met’s collection into a
    resonating ensemble. j.d.
