Sherlock and Joan (Jonny Lee Miller
and Lucy Liu) while the crime-fighters
are working as Scotland Yard
consultants after moving from New
York to London in the last series.
‘For Sherlock, being in London is a
homecoming and the transition’s been
relatively simple,’ explains showrunner
Rob Doherty. ‘For Joan, it’s more of a
challenge as she’s never really spent
time outside of New York. When we
join them, there are cracks appearing
in the partnership, and they talk about
whether moving to London was right.’
In this week’s opener, the pair
investigate an acid attack on a former

model with connections to a media
mogul (Saffron Burrows). Meanwhile,
shocking events in New York could
see the pair return to the Big Apple
sooner than they think.
The show is set to sign off with
a time jump in the last-ever episode.
But Liu says fans shouldn’t expect to
see the couple finally hook up in a
conventional sense.
‘Everyone has assumed that we’re
going to get together,’ she smiles. ‘Yes,
Sherlock and Joan have a heightened
type of love because they’ve been
through so much, but love doesn’t
necessarily need to be romantic...’
