An assassination attempt on the
king, a fire at Nampara and an
alarming new nemesis for Ross
Poldark are all on the cards when
the fifth – and final – series of
BBC1’s hugely popular period
drama begins this week.
The story picks up in 1800, just
months after Elizabeth Warleggan’s
tragic death. But Ross and Demelza
barely have time to raise a glass to
the new century when Ross is called
to London on another daredevil
mission – this time to free his old
Army friend from prison. But his
epic undertaking puts him in
danger from the start.
Here, the stars of Poldark reveal
five highlights in the drama’s
final run...

1

MARRIED BLISS?
Ross and Demelza appear to
have reached a new phase in their
often tempestuous relationship.
‘We see them in a place of peace, but
for how long it lasts I don’t know!’
reveals Aidan Turner, who plays the
title role. ‘Ross spends a lot of time
in London and Demelza is once
again at the helm in Cornwall, so
they have different responsibilities
and they spend a lot of time apart.
‘I think Ross has grown up and
has a better sense of responsibility.
He’s still impulsive and has a bit of
an edge. But all round he’s a better
person – and he’s kinder to Demelza.’

FIGHT CLUB
There are plenty of action scenes
in the final series, with Turner getting
to show off his sword-fighting skills.
‘We’ve had pistols in the past, but
we’ve never seen Ross sword-
fight,’ says Turner. ‘We
did a lot

Of all the Monterey mums sharing
their secret in Big Little Lies, arguably
no one has been more devastated
by the deadly events than Bonnie.
After all, she was the one who
pushed Celeste’s abusive husband
Perry to his death and she’s struggled
to come to terms with her actions.
Her husband Nathan and her
mystic mother Elizabeth have all
tried to get through to her, but the
incident has dredged up deeply
buried secrets of her own.
We met star Zoë Kravitz, 30,
to hear more about the show...

What do you enjoy most about
playing Bonnie? She served a
specific purpose in the first season
and we didn’t learn much about her
but now everything has come to the
surface. Her traumatic experience
has unearthed her sticky past – and
she has to deal not only with what
happened with Perry, but also with
things she was trying to run from.

How has Bonnie tried to put her
past behind her? She’s spent a lot
of time trying to move on, which is
why she’s found meditation, yoga
and all of her physical activities. But

now that’s all been destroyed. It’s
exciting to explore what happens
when a woman who is thought
to be perfect starts to fall apart.

There’s a big secret at the heart
of the show. How good are you
at keeping secrets? I don’t do
well with secrets. I think they can be
toxic. When I was a kid, I was raised
vegetarian because my mum [actress
Lisa Bonet] wanted that, but one
time when I went to Disneyland with
my dad [musician Lenny Kravitz],
I ate a big turkey leg. My dad said,
‘Don’t tell your mum,’ but when I got
home, I couldn’t look her in the eye.

Your house in the show is
amazing. Is your house like that?
I wish! Bonnie’s house is actually in
Calabasas, which is 300 miles from
Monterey, and I love shooting there.

What’s next for you? I’m doing
a TV show based on Nick Hornby’s
novel High Fidelity. My mum was
actually in the original film that
starred John Cusack. I’m now playing
the Cusack role. We’ve gender-
flipped it and moved it to New York.

You’re also a singer. How often
do you get to perform? I haven’t
made music in a while, as it’s been
difficult to do everything at one time.
I’d like to make an album, though.
