ESSENTIALS
Getting there
BA, easyJet, Ryanair and
TAP Air Portugal fly direct
to Porto from Birmingham,
Bristol, Edinburgh,
Liverpool, London and
Manchester (Gatwick
from £120; flytap.com).

Getting around
Many of Porto’s main sights
are walkable, but it also
has an inexpensive and
efficient public transport
system. A 24-hour pass
(£6.50; stcp.pt) gets you
unlimited use of the entire
network except trams, but
these vintage vehicles are
the more atmospheric way
to get around. There are
three lines, and a single
ticket costs £2.70.
The Uber taxi app also
operates in the city and
is exceptionally cheap.

Who can help?
Taste Porto offers insightful
and enjoyable walking
tours of the downtown
food scene. Friendly guide
André, or one of his team,
will lead you between
restaurants, grocery stores
and cafés, chatting with
locals and sampling
everything from slow-roast-
pork sandwiches to eclairs
(from £58 for a 3½-hour
tour; tasteporto.com).

Further info
Check out Lonely
Planet’sPocket
Portoguidebook
(£7.99, or £5.59
for the eBook; shop.
lonelyplanet.com) for
inspiration and planning
tips. The region’s tourist
board site also contains
lots of useful info (visitporto
andnorth.travel).
