It’s normal for your
baby to lose weight
after birth. Most babies
will lose between 5%
and 10% of their body
weight in the first
couple of days after
they’re born. But don’t
worry, most babies will
gain the weight back
in about two weeks.

The most
popular
baby names
for 2019
so far
According to
goodhousekeeping.
com, girls’ baby
names ending in
“a” are very popular
right now, as are
names ending in
“ley”. Predictably,
parents are also
taking a cue from the
royals, with Meghan
and Harry rising fast
as top choices.
Game of Thrones
may have left fans
bitterly disappointed,
but the characters
of this popular series
still serve as major
inspiration. At the
same time, boys’
names from the early
half of the twentieth
century are making a
resurgence, making
classrooms sound like
a rollcall from a 1950s
soda shop – think
Hank, Ace and Sonny.
According to
nameberry.com,
other key influences
include Ireland (hello,
Finn), the ancients
(we’re looking at you,
Freya) and literature
(Ophelia and Lyra
are prime examples
here). Oh, and the
Kardashians are also
making their mark.
Gender-neutral and
bohemian names
are on the up, as
are names usually
reserved for pastel
colours and jewels
(Lavender and Topaz
stand out here).

Baby cry algorithm
A team of scientists from
Northern Illinois University’s
department of electrical
engineering has designed
an artificial intelligence
algorithm that can listen
to a baby’s cries and
determine whether they
are normal or abnormal.
The paper, which was
published in the Journal of
Automatica Sinica, explains
the technique looks at
hidden patterns in your
little one’s cries, focusing
on features like time and
frequency, for example,
in order to classify them
in different ways.
A baby’s cry can
reveal a lot about their
wellbeing. This algorithm
can potentially identify

whether your baby’s cry is
the result of a medical issue
According to the scientists,
the new technology has
the potential to provide
several benefits by enabling
inexperienced parents
or healthcare providers
to better understand the
intent of cries, which could
help with the diagnosis
and treatment of several
medical problems, leading
to healthier babies and less
pressure on caregivers.
