Up-and-coming Chinese golfer Bai Zhengkai, a student at the University of Central Florida, has been blazing a trail on the PGA Tour Series-
China of late and is close to earning membership for next year’s Korn Ferry Tour, the gateway to the PGA Tour proper. PROVIDED TO CHINA DAILY

Bai’s balancing act tipping

towards tour promotion

By SHI FUTIAN
[email protected]

Just a few months ago, Bai Zheng-
kai made the difficult decision to
forego his senior golf season at the
University of Central Florida to turn
pro.
After missing the cut at the Euro-
pean Tour’s Volvo China Open in
Shenzhen in May, his decision
proved a good one.
Bai currently sits 12th on the PGA
Tour Series-China order of merit
and has one title under his belt —

last month’s Huangshan Champion-
ship in Anhui province.
Despite feeling his game is strong
enough to play at an elite level, Bai
will return to school in the fall, when
he plans to balance his studies with
playing the final four events of the
season in a bid to seal a place on the
2020 Korn Ferry Tour.
Last year, Bai’s compatriot Yuan
Yechun finished 25th on the order of
merit before battling his way
through qualifying to earn a card for
the Korn Ferry Tour, where he is cur-
rently playing a full season.

Now Bai is looking to emulate his
good friend and join Yuan in the US.
“I’m planning to go back to school
but I think I can balance the school-
work and leave to play professional
tournaments,” said Bai.
“Even if I get onto the Korn Ferry
Tour, I will still keep up with my
studies and probably take some
online courses.
“Also Yuan is a very good friend of
mine and we have both been
coached by Sean Foley so it would be
great to play together next year.”
Now Bai is aiming for a top-10 fin-
ish on the order of merit, which
would book him a spot in the final
stage of the Korn Ferry Tour Qualify-
ing Tournament.

Just making it to that stage would
guarantee him Korn Ferry member-
ship next year, but a top-45 finish
would guarantee him starts.
Bai said he’s ready to make the
step up.
“I think my game is really good at
the moment. I didn’t have too much
expectation before I came to China
this summer but I knew my game
was good enough to do well here,” he
said.
“I think my game is ready for the
Korn Ferry Tour.
“I’ve come very close to getting
into some events, and I missed the
Monday qualifier by one or two
shots so I hope I can play there next
year. I feel ready.”

Chasing wins in China while going

to school in Florida a daunting task

Lane locks it down at Dongguan Open

By SHI FUTIAN
[email protected]

American Joey Lane earned his
first professional victory after being
declared the 36-hole champion at
the Dongguan Open on Sunday.
Officials had originally reduced
the event to 54 holes, but after
another extended weather delay
they determined the tournament
would be limited to 36.
Roughly half the field was forced
to complete second rounds on Sun-
day, but Lane didn’t have to play a
single hole after taking the club-
house lead at 10-under a day earlier.
Japan’s Yuwa Kosaihira was just
three shots back with six holes to
play, but he failed to close the gap on
Lane after finishing with six straight

pars to secure solo second.
Japan’s Masamichi Uehira carded
a 67 to share third with Canada’s
Richard Jung (68), one shot ahead of
American Charlie Netzel (65) and
France’s Cyril Bouniol (67).

It was a well-deserved victory for
Lane, who carded an opening 8-un-
der 62 on the Norman Course at
Mission Hills Golf Club to grab a
four-shot lead after the first com-
pleted round. He notched a 68 in the
second round to move to 10-under.
“It’s a hard golf course, and there
were some tough pins so from tee to
green it was awesome, probably one
of the best rounds I’ve ever played,”
Lane said of his 62.
“Inside of 10 feet, I made almost
everything so it was just a great
round and one that only happens
every once in a while.”
Lane is playing his first season in
China after being talked into com-
peting by good friend and fellow
PGA Tour Series-China player David
Kocher, who remains third on the

order of merit after a T7 finish this
week. With the victory, Lane
jumped 22 spots into eighth place.
Although quiet in the first half of
the season, Lane last month fol-
lowed up a tie for 18th in Suzhou
with a tie for seventh in Huangshan
before coming away with his break-
through win.
“It’s an awesome feeling. This is
actually my first professional win on
any tour, and this is the best tour I’ve
played on so it’s an awesome week,”
said Lane, who is looking to play on
the 2020 Korn Ferry Tour.
“Finishing in the top 10 has
always been one of my main goals
for this year. I also have my eyes on a
top-five in the order of merit. With
four more events, hopefully I can
play well and keep moving up.”

Gwangju, South Korea.
Ye touched home in 4:32.07 —
1.68 seconds behind world-record
holder Katinka Hosszu of Hungary,
who finished in 4:30.39.
The Chinese swimmer came
from behind on the last length to
prevail over Yui Osashi of Japan
(4:32.33), who pocketed bronze.
“I did very well this evening. I
always had fear in this event, but I
tried to swim in the 400 medley to
prove my mentality,” said Ye.
“During the competition, I tried
to overcome things that I’m afraid
of. Today, I felt very relaxed and I
was even smiling before the start
of the race,” said the 23-year-old.
A double gold medalist at the
London 2012 Olympics, Ye also
won silver in the 200 IM.

historic win in Latvia
Yan Bing-

only the
third Chi-

to win a

event after
emerging
victorious at
the Riga
Masters in Latvia on Sunday.
The 19 year-old, who for several
years has been touted as Chinese
snooker’s next superstar, overcame
England’s Mark Joyce 5-2 in the
final to become the first teenager
to win a ranking title for 13 years.
Yan, who earned $62,000 for the
victory, joins stalwarts Ding Jun-
hui and Liang Wenbo as China’s
only ranking-event champions.
“I’m so happy to win the title. I
was a little bit lucky. Ding is still
the best Chinese player, so I have to
improve,” Yan told worldsnook-
er.com.
“There are a lot of teenage Chi-
nese players getting better and bet-
ter, especially those who come to
play in the UK. Hopefully more of
them can win titles, and of course I
hope I can win a lot of ranking
events.”

Donadoni arrived in China on

The former Italy coach will suc-

relegation trouble, just three points
off cellar-dwelling Beijing Renhe.
Donadoni has not managed

has also had spells in charge of

Reus named German
player of the year
Borussia Dortmund’s Marco
Reus has been voted Germany’s
player of the
year, Kicker
magazine
announced on
Sunday.
It is the sec-
ond time the
30-year-old
Germany
international
received the
most votes
from the Association of German
Sports Journalists in the annual
poll. He also won in 2012.
Reus received 158 of the 540
votes to win the award ahead of
Bayer Leverkusen youngster Kai
Havertz (121 votes) and Bayern
Munich’s Joshua Kimmich (35).
Dortmund captain Reus scored
17 goals and provided 12 assists in
27 Bundesliga games last season.
“It is nicer than it was seven years
ago. It is a different feeling if you
have only three or four years to play.
With every title I get more emotion-
al than before,” Reus told Kicker.

52.20sec with
a superb dis-

Muham-
mad, a gold medallist at the 2016
Rio Games, shattered the previous
best of 52.34 set by Russia’s Yuliya
Pechonkina in 2003.
“I’m just shocked,” Muhammad
said afterwards.
“My coach kept telling me (the
record) was there. I just had to
trust that and go for it.
“I wanted it so bad I knew I had
to go out there and prove myself.”
Sydney McLaughlin, who had
beaten Muhammad in the final few
strides of this season’s Oslo Dia-
mond League meeting, never
looked like closing the gap as the
New Yorker powered home.
