Take a closer look at these tiny, leaf-green forms –
a mere two to three centimetres in length. Focus on
their contours. Do you now see a lizard-like form?
Yes, these are newly-hatched chameleon babies
that have just emerged after six to nine months of
incubation. Native to the Arabian Peninsula, these
veiled chameleons are commonly found in the wild
in Yemen and Saudi Arabia. And as is the case with
most chameleon species, these change colour too.
Incidentally, colour change is usually a refl ection of
their mood, sexual state and sign of dominance.
Their bright colouration makes veiled chameleons
popular as pets and this greatly threatens the species.

Editor’s note: Sanctuary Asia urges its readers to
dissuade friends and relatives from keeping or
gifting pets. The illegal pet trade in exotic and rare
animals is a primary reason for species decline and
the operatives and middle-men are also often part
and parcel of the narcotics, human traffi cking and
the arms trades.
