Here in the Deep South, we have a whole lot to be thankful
for, but our abundance of mosquitoes is one thing we have
trouble being grateful for. Thankfully, an innovative Missis-
sippian is hard at work to combat one of our greatest nui-
sances.
The Spartan Mosquito Eradicator, made in Laurel, is
one of the most effective methods of control. At Spartan,
you won’t find sprays, fogs, coils, nets, citronella, electronic
equipment, or even zappers. In fact, you can say goodbye to
pesky mosquitoes with no batteries or electricity, just a little
water.
Jeremy Hirsch, co-founder and president of Spartan
Mosquito, wanted to enjoy the outdoors without spraying
chemicals into the air or onto the skin. He spent years de-
veloping the product, turning to methods used in Africa for
inspiration. The result hit the marketplace in late 2016. The
unassuming tubes sold in sets of two consist of simple in-
gredients like sugar. Fill the containers with water to the fill
line, pop on the cap, hang in a tree, and rest easy knowing
you’ll be mosquito free for 90 days.

The result is a barrier around the property. The envi-
ronmentally friendly ingredients draw in the pests, and af-
ter ingesting the solution, the pests are eradicated. The sci-
ence behind Spartan is simple yet effective, with the water
creating a chemical reaction inside the tube that releases
carbon dioxide. Combined with sugar and strategic color-
ing, the tube attracts mosquitoes, a fact that was tested all
around the country and beyond, including the swampy
climates of south Mississippi. Two tubes are effective for
three months for a full acre of land.
The Spartan solution should be implemented as soon
as the first bite of the season is felt. Spartan should be set
approximately six feet off the ground, within 180 feet of
each other along the property line. Since mosquitoes flock
to the eradicators, they shouldn’t be placed where people
gather. Once deployed, they create a barrier, giving the
pests a target—and your summer days sweet relief. Mos-
quitoes feed on the solution and are eliminated before
they can breed.
Within 15 days, you’ll notice a decrease in the mosqui-
