Back in the early 2000s, we were

approached by the BBC charity Comic

Relief to work on a website for the Dubble

chocolate bar. Dubble was a really early

champion of Fairtrade chocolate and

helped spearhead the initiative. The site

was great fun, full of cartoon characters

and delicious imagery. As it was Comic

Relief, we didn’t charge for the build and

were instead paid in chocolate! After the

launch a huge pile of boxes arrived. They

don’t sell Dubble bars any more but to this

day I couldn’t face eating another one.

When you think of retirement communities, your
first thoughts may not be positive. The process of
vetting and selecting a new home is never easy. This is
why getting to design and develop a family of websites
for Grace Management, a leader in the senior living
space, meant a lot to us. We were addressing, through
design, the emotions and daunting tasks associated
with this particular moment in life. Our solution created
an experience that’s consistent; one that users could
trust and count on. Maybe “most fun” isn’t the best
way to describe it but it was certainly rewarding.

Recently, I jumped on a grenade for a web design project for Aviara Boats, a
new luxury boat brand from Nemo in partnership with MasterCraft Boat
Company. Led by Nemo’s web goddess Rita Gonsalves, our team completely
rethought how we approach UX and web design in general, allowing us to work
within a bananas timeline. Using some ass-kicking new modelling tools and our
assassin-level design skills, we fast-tracked wireframes all the way through to a
live site. The payoff of being able to test our designs in real-time was by far the
most fun and rewarding part of the project.

Back in the days of my web/
software company (the forgotten
1990s), we built a website for a (now
defunct) beef jerky company called
JerkTown USA. Its mascot was a
farmer in overalls. The client wanted an
animation on the home page with the
mascot eating a giant stick of beef
jerky. We tried to convince him it might
be... odd. Even with his approval, it
ended up looking as uncomfortable as
you can imagine. After launch, one of
the team embedded the Hamster
Dance audio in our dev version.
