The GODS of SHRED

July 2019 musculardevelopment.com MD 91

You know your seat in the pantheon of The Gods of Shred is secure when
your nickname is “The Blade.” Dexter set such a high standard for himself
that even on the rare occasions that he’s 2 to 3 percent off his best, he’s still
ty pically the most ripped man onstage. Meaning, he’s not really “off ” at all,
just a touch off for him. The most impressive aspect of Dexter’s propensity
for showing up shredded is his remarkable consistency. Dexter has stepped
onstage as a pro 87 times since his rookie debut at the 1999 Arnold Classic,
and not once has he been off the mark. That’s also why he holds the record of
28 pro wins, including a Mr. Olympia title and fi ve wins at the Arnold Classic
Ohio, a record unlikely to broken in the lifetimes of anyone reading this. The
Blade’s clear cuts are most evident in trademark poses of his like the crab
most-muscular, where his pecs and delts seem to be composed of bundled
fi bers, and the side chest, where the split dividing his quads and hams is deep
and dark enough to lose your car keys in. Finally, extra credit must be given
to Dexter for continuing to compete in extraordinary condition at an age when
most pros have long lost that look and usually have problem areas still holding
adipose tissue like the lower back and lower region of the abdominals, not to
mention unsightly loose skin. The Blade will be 50 years old this fall, and he’s
still sharper than most of the men half his age sharing the stage with him.
