Study of Matthew, oil on Winsor & Newton canvas-covered board, 18 3 14in (45.5 3 35.5cm).
This is a crucial stage – I made a close study of inite proportions of scale, tone and colour values, and all without losing the energy and immediacy
of the ired-up earlier stages. I love to describe hair styles loosely with lost-and-found edges around the periphery of the overall head shape,
creating a three-dimensional feel. Note I have used light against dark for the right-hand side, graduating to dark against light for the left. The
counterchange is ideal to give a sense of separation, bringing the subject forward from the background. A little further description of the tee-shirt
and leece detail – not too much detail here – served to unify the whole efect
