PRACTICAL

 FINISHED PAINTING
Winter Stream, acrylic on Canson Moulin du
Roy Not watercolour paper 140lb (300gsm),
11 15in (2828cm).
I continued shaping the painting, adding
further colour and i nally spattered the
suggestion of grasses across the foreground
with a mix of yellow ochre, black, white, some
matt medium and enough water to make
it run. Using a size 6 round brush I l icked
the paint on the painting, watching for any
overshoot and wiping it off immediately with
a damp cloth

p STAGE FOUR
As the painting progressed I used slightly
less transparency in the paint. To do this I
simply altered the ratio of the paint mix,
using more pigment, slightly less water and
slightly less matt medium. I applied some
bold brushstrokes with a ¾ in sable l at brush
to build a multi-layered structure

p STAGE THREE
I used slightly thicker paint diluted with water and a little matt medium.
I began to build up the mid-values of the painting, allowing the darkest
and lightest to provide reference. I used burnt sienna, yellow ochre and
perylene violet in various quantities and strengths

Paint a winter stream using my photo, right, as
reference and my suggested materials. You might
wish to follow the methods I used in your own
