MASTERCLASS
p STAGE FOUR
Watercolour often dries lighter so at this stage I strengthened the colours on the lower heads,
making sure there was a little connection between the shapes by dragging the colours through
and not making them too conined within the lines to avoid making the lower heads look
isolated and outlined. I used mixtures of quinacridone magenta and crimson plus a touch of
quinacridone burnt orange on the falls and a mix of quinacridone magenta and ultramarine
blue on the standards. A small touch of opera rose brought a beautiful touch of bright pink to
the base of the standards
p STAGE FIVE
Having worked on the lower heads for a while I turned my attention to strengthening the
sword-like foliage around the lowers. I used the same green mixtures to bring in the stronger
colour on the foliage. I then started to go into the negative shapes around the lowers and the
foliage with darker tones of blue and purple to let the foliage come out from the background
washes of colour. For this I used washes of ultramarine blue with a dash of quinacridone
magenta. If it makes it easier for you, you can mark out the shapes with an aquarelle pencil
before adding the washes
