p STAGE TWO
The canvas was squared-up, but not too tightly because I
wanted to give myself room to interpret the drawing, then
I drew in the composition with raw umber and a l at Milan
synthetic brush of medium size – No. 8

 STAGE ONE
I made some drawings
in a sketchbook, which
I use to rel ect about
ideas and develop
concepts

p STAGE FOUR

I had to i ne-tune the structure
of the wall, as mistakes in a
regularly divided structure
are too noticeable. Therefore
I measured up more precisely
the spacing of the lines and
re-traced them with a pencil
on top of the painting, then I
re-adjusted the painting with
the brushes

 STAGE FIVE
I applied an undertone to the skin,
just to kill the whiteness of the
canvas and establish the shadows
and the lights, then I let it dry and
moved on to the dress

p STAGE THREE
I started from the background, applying a multi-coloured wash to create an
undertone, and then I started to paint the dirt and torn-up posters with their texts
and dif erent colours. I did not make the words on the posters too recognisable
because the purpose of the painting was to focus on the i gure. A regular succession
of horizontal lines in the structure of the wall helped me to give it an order
