MASTERCLASS
p q STAGE SEVEN
I started painting the skin, creating cooler or warmer colours both for the shadows and for the
lights. The main colours used for the shadows were yellow ochre pale, cadmium scarlet, viridian,
French ultramarine blue, cobalt blue, permanent carmine and burnt sienna. For the lights I used
yellow ochre pale, cadmium scarlet, cadmium orange and titanium white, and some cobalt or
French ultramarine blue to cool it down
t STAGE SIX
I painted the girl’s dress using a mix of
French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna,
then I hinted at a pattern of white lowers. It
is important that I did not copy everything
as it is in the photograph – it is much more
rewarding to try to understand where the
pattern goes, its lines, which of those lowers
should be in the light and which ones in
the shadows, and paint it intuitively rather
than wasting days and energy on trying to
replicate it precisely
