words delivered in a familiar Southern drawl.
SH: What are the musts in a Charlotte Moss interior?
CM: I want my rooms to be infused with history, curiosity, humor,
and pizzazz. And I like to add in a dash of bohème. That’s like the
splash of cayenne pepper in a soup that takes it up a notch. Give me
something from left field that makes you wonder where it came
from and why it’s here, and I’ll make it work. As an example, in
my house in East Hampton I have a big basket atop an ottoman
that holds not only magazines but also a strand of gumball-sized
turquoise beads and a couple of Indian bracelets. The pieces almost
seem to be part of a still life, but they make you do a double-take
because you don’t usually see jewelry in the living room. I love
nothing more than great found objects.
SH: That explains the beautiful collections in so many of your rooms.
CM: I’m always on the hunt. It’s what I love to do, and my eyes are
always open. Often, I’ll find an object or a grouping of things for a
