hen designer Carolyn
Kendall took on the
renovation of a Nashville
residence, she knew she
had to balance the private
and public lives of her
clients. As prominent philanthropists, the home-
owners often open their doors for fundraising
efforts. In addition, they enjoy hosting smaller
gatherings of friends, as well as relaxing in
the home’s family spaces. “The house needed a
formal look while still serving the daily lives of
the couple and their two sons,” says Kendall.
In the living room, the wife requested a
sunny, bright palette of golds and grays. “The
hues we chose seem to immediately put guests
at ease,” says Kendall. Classic upholstered
furniture is tempered with antiques and touches
of modern in the lighting and coffee tables. The
designer worked with architect Ridley Wills to
add architectural details, such as the ceiling
moldings and cased openings. An Oriental rug
