a golden buff stucco exterior and a dark gray
standing-seam metal roof. Deering also drew
inspiration from 1820s pattern books. Accordingly,
the portico, four columns, and entablature enliven
the street elevation and establish an elevated
stature that graciously marks the front door. These
same notions continue inside with architectural
details and craftsmanship granting time-honored
traditions, as seen in the stairway’s carpenter-
turned spindles and curving balustrade.
While the basic floor plan reflects classical
convictions, rooms flow one into another in a
straightforward, livable arrangement, allowing
the drama of the house to unfold in a light-filled
great room with 21-foot soaring ceilings. For the
interior decor, designer Sara Hartley of Hultman
Interiors stepped in to select the furnishings
and finishes that complete the home. “When the
Hamiltons relocated, they sold nearly everything
except for five or six pieces of art,” she says. “It’s
refreshing to start with a clean slate.”
Hartley eschews a defined look or signature
style and instead allows the client’s desires and
needs to set the course. “Heather knows exactly
what she likes,” says the designer. “And while she
gravitates toward a slightly glitzy palette, she also
