FYN RESTAURANT, CAPE TOWN
Japanese abacus-inspired bead installation by Tristan du Plessis of Studio A
“We had a large double volume in our space, which is a gift, but we also wanted to
create an intimate dining experience,” says Tristan. “I felt I needed to both celebrate
this volume and bring down the height to create a more intimate feel. This soroban-
inspired bead feature (soroban is a Japanese abacus) does both.”
Made of large carved wooden beads, the installation adds significantly to the
African-Japanese design aesthetic of the restaurant, and makes for a sophisticated
yet authentic atmosphere. It also “blurs the lines between the kitchen and dining
room to create an integrated food experience”.
