It looksat theJohannesburgArt Galleryas onelocusof the
film.Anotherareais theZamaZamas,or artisanalminers,
whoare sucha centralpartof theJohannesburgworld
andSouthAfricaneconomicworld– a worldin whichthe
informalsectorhasto subsidisetheformalsector.I suspect
it’s a premonitionof whatwillbe happeningnotjustin South
Africabutalsoin manyotherplaces,wherethecentralised,
globalisedeconomylooksafterfewerpeople,anda greater
percentageof peoplein the world have to work at the edges
of the formal economy.


Musichasbeenan integralpartof yourwork.Whatcanwe
expectin thenewshow?There’san electronicdrumkit that
playsitself,a choirinsidesewing machines, and soundtracks
to manydifferentfilms.
But,particularlyat Zeitz,in thegrandatrium,there’s
a newpiece:fourlargemegaphoneswithspeakersinside.
I’veinvitedfiveSouthAfricanmusiciansandcomposers
to writeandmakemusicto be playedthroughthese
megaphones.Theyrangefrompiano,to vocal,to electric
violin.Thecomposersare PhilipMiller,WaldoAlexander,
NeoMuyanga,KyleShephardandNhlanhlaMahlangu.
A coupleof timesa daythedifferentpieceswillbe played,
trying to find a breath in that very large space.
