colournexttothatcolourandgetawaywithit.”

Obviously,a riotousabundanceoftulipshadtobeourchoiceforthecover

andtheopeningimageofourexclusivecoverageofKarenRoos’newlyrevamped

EnglishestateTheNewtinSomerset.Asmuchastheprojectbogglesthemindin

bothambitionandbeauty,italsobringsa uniquelySouth African aesthetic to a

littlecorneroftheUK– whichcanonlybea goodthing.

TheVISIteamrarelysetsoutwitha themeinmind,butoftenoneemergesas

themagazineisputtogether,andthisissueisnoexception.Youwillseethatall

ofthefeaturedhousesareobsessedwiththeirviews.Someuseingeniousshutter

systems,likethemagnificentCliftonhousedesignedbySAOTA(page116);others

placewindowsatunusualheightsorlookingoutontounconventionalvistas,like

architectNadineEngelbrecht’sinventiveMenloParkrenovation(page62) and the

LangebaanLagoonhousedesignedbyBettinaWoodward(page96).

Whilebringingtheoutsideinisnotanewconcept,ithasbeenbeautifully

exploredandreinventedbyHendreBloeminGreyton(page106)andbyGillian

HollofVeldArchitectsonMonaghanFarm(page84).Andifforyoutheadvent

ofspringisasignaltostarttakingtheoccasionalweekendawayandyouare

a fanoffreshlocalproduce,makesuretostopinatJacques Erasmus and Hein

Liebenberg’sbeautifulnewshopinMontagu(page74).
