‘I’d inherited two old sofas from a
family member, but they looked a little
threadbare,’ she explains. ‘Structurally,
however, they were still comfy and sturdy.
I searched for the perfect fabric and found
some soft grey and charcoal linen at Romo
Fabrics. I couldn’t decide which one I liked
best, so went with both – one for each
sofa.’ Franka then found a local upholsterer
who was still training, so was able to cover
both pieces for a very affordable fee.
The finished results look classy and
expensive, but as they are upcycled, came
in at a fraction of the normal cost.

STEP THREE Franka enjoys
finding a bargain, so hunted out some
online buys to stamp her style on the
room. ‘I picked up the tall doctor’s cabinet
at a local auction house,’ she explains, ‘and
the old chest was found at the local tip.

I’ve even used an old step ladder as a side
table – I will always re-purpose everything
I can in our home!’ smiles Franka.

STEP FOURBecause the brick and
woodwork provided prominent colours,
Franka decided to accessorise the sofa
with lots of burnt orange, terracotta and
dusky pink cushions and throws from
Dunelm and Next. Finally, it was time
to add some greenery. ‘As a sun room, we
wanted this space to be an extension of
the garden,’ Franka explains. ‘I wanted
to put as many plants in as possible, so
visited my local Wyevale Garden Centre.
After speaking to the indoor plant expert,
I was able to make some great choices on
which ones would thrive in the room.’
Franka filled old terracotta pots with the
plants and repurposed an old rustic trolley
into an eyecatching plant shelf. ‘I couldn’t
be prouder of the room,’ says Franka. YH

‘We made the space what we wanted, on
a reasonable budget – it’s now the perfect
room for relaxing after work or chilling
out with the family at the weekend. I just
need to make sure that I don’t forget to
water all the new arrivals!’

Good idea!

Adding lots of plants to frame
the windows stops the room
looking sparse and cold.

Rustic plant pots are the key to the
evergreen feel in Franka’s sun room
