Neil Whitehead, Brand Manager at Impey
Wetrooms, has the lowdown on creating
the perfect open-plan scheme...
Why a Wet room? This flexible, open-plan space
offers an ideal showering environment for every kind
of home, from a compact modern apartment to a
large family property. In a small bathroom it allows
you to maximise the floorplan, and in a larger family
space, you can combine a wet area and a bath
for the ultimate ‘wow’-factor. A level-access entry
offers a safe and accessible environment, ideal for
wheelchair users, people with mobility difficulties
and young children. Wetrooms are also ideal for
awkward-shaped rooms such as a lofts, garage
conversions, cupboards or even a basement refurb.
Flooring A wetroom can be installed on both
timber and solid concrete floors. The most widely
used and convenient flooring is a prefabricated floor
former (often called a dec), such as Impey’s Aquadec
Easyfit, which can be fitted quickly and easily.
Purpose made as a floorboard replacement, the
dec sits on the structural joists to create an inbuilt
drainage gradient of 1:40, ensuring that waste
water flows directly towards the drain.
Drainage Standard gravity drainage usually
works well for most wetrooms. For ground floor
conversions or basements, pumped options remove
the water away efficiently from the shower area.
tanking Waterproofing is vital and ensures your
space is watertight for the duration of its lifespan.
The most popular type is a thick waterproof
membrane, such as Impey’s popular Waterguard
system, which is adhered to walls and floors to turn
the space into a watertight ‘tank’.
SurFaceS T o add a touch of luxury and to ensure
that the wetroom floor dries quickly, consider
installing under-floor heating. Remember to choose
a product that is suitable for your surface and
available in multiple lengths to make fitting easier.

If you’re worried about
splashes straying on to
a nearby WC and basin,
consider installing a
simple shower screen
if space allows.
