As our lives changed, our
house evolved with us
‘W
e feel extremely fortunate to
have been able to make our
home in this beautiful village
on the edge of Edinburgh,’ Fiona shares.
‘Buying a new-build felt like the right
thing to do when our daughters were born.
I wanted to be able to focus on them rather
than undertake a major renovation and I
was based at home for a number of years.’
When Fiona returned to work as a teacher,
she and Iain felt ready to make some
changes and they knocked down a wall
between the kitchen and the playroom,
realising that an open-plan arrangement
would work better for them. The results
were great, but then work unexpectedly
took them away from the house for a
while, when Fiona found herself with a
live-in job at a nearby boarding school.
‘We rented out our house for a few years
and when we returned, it felt so good to
be living in our own space again, we felt a
renewed determination to make the house
absolutely as we wanted it.’
Fiona and Iain Monk love the flexibility their contemporary new-build
home has afforded them at different stages of their lives
