You might be looking all
over the paper this morning
for the entries for Wednes-
day’s races at Del Mar.
Unfortunately, you won’t
find them in the paper. You
can get them only if you
subscribe (it’s free) to our
email horse racing newslet-
ter. Why? Sports editor
Angel Rodriguez answered
a few questions from horse
racing newsletter writer
John Cherwa to explain.
Cherwa: The Times has
tried to eliminate the en-
tries and results on a couple
of occasions and always
brought them back. Why try
this experiment yet again
when it has failed in the
past?
Rodriguez: It is true we
have had stops and starts
on the entries and results in
the past. I think we finally
have our online operation to
the point where we feel more
confident sending our read-
ers to our digital products.
The horse racing newsletter
was developed after the last
time the decision was made
to drop entries and results.
It is now up to speed with a
large number of subscribers
and much more complete
information.
Cherwa: So, if the horse
racing public starts inun-
dating you with complaints,
will you reconsider?
Rodriguez: We obviously
take reader feedback seri-
ously, but we want to pro-
vide our readers with the
best possible journalism on
all our platforms — print,
digital and social. Space in
our print product is at a
premium, and as we’ve
added more reporters in the
last year, we have to make
decisions on what we feel is
the best use of that space.
Now that we have entries
and results in the newslet-
ter, we can use that space in
print for more stories. And
hopefully Mel Brooks
doesn’t storm our El Se-
gundo offices.
Cherwa: Is it just horse
racing that is being picked
on, or are you eliminating
other sports? And what
sports are you keeping
statistical matter on and
why?
Rodriguez: As some of
our readers have surely
noticed by now, we have also
eliminated the majority of
what we call agate — the
scoreboards and standings
that would appear in most
newspapers. It doesn’t
make sense to us to contin-
ue filling the paper with this
type of information, espe-
cially when we have any
number of stories we can
use in the print section that
are of interest to more read-
ers.
Cherwa: Is this a ruse to
send everyone to the news-
letter, where suddenly you
will start charging for it?
Rodriguez: We have no
plans on charging for the
newsletter. I don’t want to
go all George H.W. Bush
with his “read my lips, no
new taxes” line, but there
has been zero discussion on
charging people for the
newsletter.
Cherwa: Will this mean
that horse racing story
coverage in the print edition
will also be on its way out?
Rodriguez: This would
be a really horrible way to let
you know we don’t need you
anymore, wouldn’t it? We
have seen this year how
important horse racing is to
our audience. I know the
focus on horse deaths is
probably not something
fans of the sport or the
industry want to see, but it
is important that the L.A.
Times has been leading the
way on this coverage. We will
not back away from cov-
ering all aspects of horse
racing.
You can subscribe to our
horse racing newsletter by
going to latimes.com/
horseracing. It’s free, and
the entries and results plus
daily coverage from Del Mar
will be emailed directly to
your inbox.
Ask Hershiser
Dodgers legend Orel
Hershiser has agreed to
answer a few reader ques-
tions. You can email me
your question at hous-
[email protected]
and he will answer selected
ones in a future Morning
Briefing. This is a rare op-
portunity to connect with
one of the best Dodgers of
all time. My advice: Try to
come up with a unique
question. You don’t want to
be the 112th person to ask,
“What was it like to break
the scoreless -innings
streak?”
MORNING BRIEFING
Explaining our coverage of horse racing
By Houston Mitchell
The Washington Red-
skins will become the first
NFL team to have a gam-
bling-focused telecast of
their games, offering cash
prizes to viewers who cor-
rectly predict in-game out-
comes during the preseason.
The telecasts on the re-
gional cable network NBC
Sports Washington will fol-
low a formula established by
the Redskins’ NBA neigh-
bors, the Washington Wiz-
ards. The Wizards, however,
offered the free-to-play con-
tests during the regular sea-
son, while the Redskins will
have them only during the
four preseason games, when
NBC Sports Washington
has TV rights.
The network will contin-
ue to offer a traditional tele-
cast on its main channel,
while the gambling-focused
telecast will air simulta-
neously on its secondary
channel, NBC Sports Wash-
ington Plus. The Wizards of-
fered the alternate telecast
on eight games this season,
and they had increased rat-
ings and fan engagement,
said Damon Phillips, the
network’s general manager.
Starting the interactive
telecasts now allows the net-
work to be ready when legal
online or mobile sports bet-
ting becomes available in its
viewing area, Phillips said.
For now, the games are free
to play and the network will
give away $1,000 in cash to
one winner per quarter of
each game.
The Los Angeles Sta-
dium at Hollywood Park
doesn’t have a naming rights
deal yet, but its plaza, for-
merly known as Champions
Plaza, was unveiled as
American Airlines Plaza on
Tuesday. Rams Chief Op-
erating Officer Kevin De-
moff and Chargers Presi-
dent of Business Operations
A.G. Spanosspoke at a news
conference for the plaza’s
unveiling. The 70,000-seat
stadium is more than 70%
complete and on track to
open next summer.

he got “rolled up on” in prac-
tice. ... San Francisco run-

Simmons says he
felt ‘singled out’
Philadelphia 76ers All-
Star guard Ben Simmons
explained a social media
post that seemed to imply he
had been racially profiled by
security staff at a Mel-
bourne, Australia, casino by
saying he and his friends felt
“singled out.”
Simmons posted a video
on Instagram in which he
questioned why he and two
black friends were asked for
identification but another
person in their group who is
white was not. He deleted
the post Tuesday morning,
when it started making news
and after the casino issued a
statement saying its securi-
ty staff routinely performs
ID checks on anyone who
appears younger than 25.
Simmons, 23, apparently
wasn’t recognized by securi-
ty at one of the casino’s entry
points Monday night, but he
was allowed in at a second
entry point after providing
identification.
Later Tuesday, Simmons
posted on Twitter to explain
his earlier video.
“Last night at Crown ...
my friends and I felt person-
ally singled out, no one likes
to feel like this,” the Mel-
bourne-born Simmons
wrote. “I am very passionate
about equality and I will al-
ways speak up.”
Simmons, whose father is
African American, did not
explain why he deleted the
Instagram post.
Udonis Haslem,39, an-
nounced he is returning for a
17th season with the Miami
Heat. ... Turner Sports an-
nounced that former star
guard Steve Nash will take
on an expanded role in his
second year with the net-
work, contributing to TNT’s
NBA coverage. He also is re-
turning to Champions
League soccer broadcasts. ...

Galaxy move
Boateng to D.C.
The Galaxy sent mid-
fielder Ema Boateng to D.C.
United in exchange for
$250,000 in target-allocation
money and obtained
$200,000 in TAM from Or-
lando in a cash swap, moves
the team made in hopes of
funding the acquisition of
wingerCristian Pavon from
Argentine club Boca
Juniors.
The Galaxy must com-
plete the Pavon deal
Wednesday before the MLS
transfer window closes. The
team also has to clear an in-
ternational roster spot for
Pavon, something it could
do through another trade or
by demoting a player to its
USL affiliate.
Boateng, 25, a speedy fan
favorite from Ghana, scored
nine goals and had 13 assists
in 108 games in four seasons
with the Galaxy. Pavon, 23, is
expected to sign with the
Galaxy on a short-term loan
with a pricey option to buy.

Wayne Rooney will be
leaving MLS after less than
two seasons to return to play
in England and be closer to
his family. The former Eng-
land captain, 33, will remain
with D.C. United until the
end of the season before join-
ing second-tier Champi-
onship team Derby County
as player-coach.
UCLA senior linebacker
Tyree Thompson tweeted
that he underwent surgery
for an undisclosed injury, po-
tentially depriving the Bru-
ins of a projected starter.
The severity of Thompson’s
injury and a timetable for his
return were not immediately
known. Thompson’s tweet
included a picture of him in a
hospital bed with his lower
left leg and foot heavily
bandaged.

Ashleigh Barty lost 6-7
(5), 6-3, 6-4 to American
Sofia Kenin in second-
round play at the Rogers
Cup in Toronto, putting the
Australian’s No. 1 ranking in
peril. World No. 2Naomi
Osaka of Japan would over-
take Barty for the top rank-
ing by winning her first Rog-
ers Cup match Wednesday
when she faces Germany’s
Tatjana Maria. Americans
Sloane Stephens and Venus
Williamsalso lost.
St. Louis Blues defense-
man Joel Edmundsonwas
awarded a one-year, $3.1-mil-
lion contract in arbitration.

signed forward Rocco
Grimaldito a one-year deal
worth $1 million.

Tour suspended Thorbjorn
Olesen pending the investi-
gation into the Danish golf-
er’s arrest July 29 in London
on charges of being drunk on
an aircraft and assaulting a
female passenger while she
slept.
Two-time Indianapolis
500 winner Al Unser Jr.
pleaded guilty to operating a
vehicle while intoxicated
May 20 in Avon, Ind., but will
spend no time in jail. Unser,
