On August 3, 2019.Abeloved sister,cousin,
and aunt, who proudly counted more than 200
nieces and nephews great grand, and great-
great. Elsie was born onFebruary 12, 1932,
andraised in Manchester,NH. After graduating
from Central High School in 1949 and working
for more thanadecade in Manchester,she
moved to Northern Virginia in 1962, where
she lived in Alexandria, Arlington, andFairfax
with her lifelong friend and cousin, Elizabeth
D.Ashooh, most recently at Goodwin House
Alexandria. Elsie worked as an administrative
assistant to Congressman Melvin R. Laird (R-
WI) in theU.S.House of Representatives and as
acongressional liaison at the General Services
Administration for some 30 years before retir-
ingin1990.AfoundingmemberofHolyTrans-
figuration Melkite Greek Catholic Church in
McLean,VA,she devoted countless hours each
year asamember of the Ladies Guild and
to assisting with theFallFoodFestival and
the Lebanese Holiday Sweets Sale fundraisers.
Elsie will be remembered at HolyTransfigura-
tion ata10:30 a.m. visitation, followed by
an 11:30 a.m. liturgy onWednesday,August
7, 2019. Visitation and liturgy will then occur
at Our Lady of the Cedars Melkite Catholic
Church in Manchester,NH, onadate to be
announced soon, with interment following at
Saint Joseph’sCemetery,inBedford, NH.

Margaret “Peg” MaryWohlgemuth Burroughs
of Annapolis passed away on July 31, 2019.
Peg was born onFebruary 15,1928, in Annapo-
lis,tothe late GeorgeFringer andVeronica
FitzgeraldWohlgemuth. She wasraised in
Washington, DC and NewYork City.Peg attend-
ed St. Anne’sElementary School and Immac-
ulata Preparatory School inWashington and
graduated from Notre Dame College in Balti-
more.She wasafirst grade teacher in Balti-
more,then worked for Army Special Services
in Europe andWashington, and forVolunteers
in Service to America (VISTA), as director of
college recruitment. In 1971, Peg married the
late Henry “Hank” Dashiel Burroughs,Jr. ,an
award winning Associated Press photographer.
They retired to their home inWest River,
Maryland.Avid sailors,Peg and Hank enjoyed
countless cruises on their 30 foot Cheoy Lee,
the Carina. In 2007, Peg published “Close-
Ups in History”,abiography and pictorial
collection of her husband’scareer as an AP
and White House photographer from post-war
Germany through the presidency of Gerald
Ford. Peg wasatireless volunteer,serving as
aboard member of the Baywoods Residents
Association, chairman of the Baywoods Activ-
ities and Arts Committee,aboard member at
Historic London town, president of the Chesa-
peake Environmental Protection Association,
president of the Maryland Chapter of Save
our Streams,andamember of numerous
other environmental and historic groups in
Anne Arundel County.Peg is survived by two
brothers and their wives,George and Honora
WohlgemuthofAnnapolisandBillandPat
Wohlgemuth ofWest Chester,Pennsylvania,
and 13 nieces and nephews.Inaddition to
her parents and husband, she is predeceased
byabrother and his wife,Tom and Anne
Wohlgemuth.Afuneral mass will be held at

In addition to her parents,she was preceded

GARYSMITH
Gary Gordon Smith died on July 29, 2019, of
complications from leukemia at the age of
59, inWashington, DC.Hewas born on July
22, 1960, in Geneva, Switzerland, where his
father,RobertS.Smith, was acting secretary
general for theWorldFederation of the UN,
and his mother,Sally L. Smith, who had done
research for theWorld Health Organization,
served asarepresentative of the International
Conference of SocialWork. Gary bravely fought
and overcame medical issues all his life with
an indefatigable spirit,awry sense of humor,
and an infectious laugh. He loved kids,his cats
JB and Sprite,and musicals,most especially
Oliver!
In 1961 the Smiths moved toWashington,
where Robert Smith joined the State Depart-
ment. When Gary entered elementary school,
he was found to suffer from severe dyslexia.
At the same time,Sally Smith saw that Gary’s
mind was sharp and inventive.She developed
innovative ways to inspire his learning, includ-
ing themed birthday parties in which children
played roles of characters out of history.
Finding no school available to meet Gary’s
needs,Sally founded the Lab School ofWash-
ington in 1967 with her pioneering Academic
Club Methodology as its teaching framework. A
prolific author,she went on to teach and direct
the master’sprogram in special education at
American University for 32 years.
Gary often described the first day of the
Lab School as the happiest day of his life,a
sentimentechoedbythousandsofchildren
with learning differences who have attended
the Lab Schools ofWashington and Baltimore.
Once he learned to read, Gary becamealover
of reading and writing, crafting stories based
on his own experiences,containing lessons
for life relevant to children and adults of all
abilities,and often stressing open mindedness,
resilience,and hope.Heloved working with the
children at John Eaton School and the Macomb
Street playground, teaching computer skills to
grade schoolers at the University of the District
of Columbia, and working part time atAUin his
later years.
He leaves two brothers,Nicholas of
Darnestown, Maryland, and Randall of New
Orleans,Louisiana, and one niece,Maggie
Smith, also of New Orleans,aswell as numer-
ous cousins and loved ones.The family wishes
to thank the doctors and staff of Georgetown
Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center,who
provided Gary with many years of kind and
effective treatment of his leukemia.
Funeral arrangements are private,butapublic
memorial service will take place in the fall.

Harriet MariaTarver died July 31, 2019 in Casey
House Hospice.She was felled byastroke
on July 13. Though 91, she left us too soon.
Harriet was born on Lookout Mountain, GA
where her ashes will return to join her parents
and sister.Her parents were Benjamin Marcus
Tarver and EleanorFairfax Irwin. She was
married to the late Charles Howard Pitts.She
was alumnus ofUofAlabama, worked as
astatistician at both the US Census Bureau
and the Dept. of Energy.After retirement, she
honed her painting skills and traveled. She was
alifelong dancer.
She will be missed by her many friends at
Riderwood retirement community and espe-
cially by her daughters,Carol, Gail, Jeanne
Pitts,and SaraCoutts; grandchildren, Alan
Coutts,Benjamin and Stephanie Blaufarb;
great-grandchildren, Brandon, Lucas,and Pey-
ton Coutts; and by her partnerFrank Elam.

world wide expansion of the hotel divi-
sion, including working with the team
that developed the Courtyard by Marriott
Hotels.After retirement he spent another
34 plus years as an entrepreneur in the
InformationTechnology industry.Sym-

tional black owned IT firms in the country.
