Rugby World UK – July 2019

(Rick Simeone) #1
is defi nitely Chiefs’ gain. A club legend
and a hero to boys and dads alike!
Aaron Greenslade, Cornwall

No dawdling allowed!
With the season over, here are a few
suggested law amendments:
1. If the ball goes forward in a pass
it’s a forward pass. Which way the
hands are pointing is irrelevant.
2. Penalise players who join a caterpillar
ruck just to add a few feet between the
nine and those attempting a chargedown.
3. Limit the time forwards have to
get to a lineout when they have the
throw. Get rid of the dawdle.

4. Raise the protective padding on posts
so that to score a try you must contact
the base of the post. Better still, get rid
of this law altogether since it’s almost
impossible to stop a try by this means.
Paul Aynsley, South-West London

Give six-point try a go
Try bonus points have clearly worked
yet aren’t awarded in the biggest
games – the knockout stages
of both the club competitions
and the World Cup. All that
matters is winning and
players adopt signifi cantly
diff erent tactics.
We should avoid this divide.
We can encourage running
rugby by further adjusting
the points system – I suggest
six for a try, two for a penalty
and one for a conversion.
Richard Oliver
Attenborough, Notts
RW says:An increased try
value has been trialled, but it

created a rise in cynical illegal play as
teams protected their line at all costs.

How do Saracens do it?
Saracens won the double and look
unstoppable. There have been inquiries
over their spending. Premiership clubs
are allowed to spend up to £6.4m on
player wages, excluding two marquee
players. However, Saracens have
earned the right to spend more
due to their home-grown
(England-qualifi ed) players.
I’m an Exeter supporter
and we’ve struggled with the
salary cap this year, but our
team fi nancially looks like
amateurs compared to the
worth of the Saracens XV.
Sam Harries, Exeter, Devon

He’s not so Goode
Alex Goode is a good club
player but falls short of
being an international. He
lacks that electrifying turn
of pace like a Hogg or Daly.
The best player in the
world is Jamie George, and
the great thing is that he
doesn’t even look athletic.
Mark Price, via Facebook
RW says: We disagree –
they’re both terrifi c. See
our Top 100 players feature
that starts on page 35.
