What Are Spikes?
Spikes, a traction device, is a shoe
sole attachment. Traction means
ability of spikes to hold on to the icy
terrain without sliding. A traction
device prevents falling, slipping, and
tripping on an icy trail.Design of Spikes
The idea of chain-based design is borrowed from the practice of putting chains around the
vehicle tires for added traction. The device design prevents snow build-up under the feet. An

and a harness. A spike is a sharp
pointed object. Generally, the device
has 12-point tough metal spikes
on each foot. The spikes are much
shorter than one inch.Material Used for Spikes
The metal could be stainless steel, hardened stainless steel, or titanium. The harness is made
of an elastomer, an elastic material that regains the original shape on letting go the deforming
force. Elastomers are flexible and stretchable. For example, synthetic and natural rubbers are
elastomers. Heavy-duty elastomer harness ensures snug fit. The durable materials can survive
extreme cold weather temperatures (up to (-) 30 degree Celsius).358
