G

oldfish have a gas-filled bag
at the centre of their bodies.
This swim bladder helps to keep
the fish buoyant at any level in
the water. When air is withdrawn
from the bag, the fish will sink to a
lower level. The swim bladder also
aids balance and amplifies sound.

Bloody nose

What are the possible causes of nosebleeds in dogs and what

actions should be taken if this happens?

I

f your dog has an episode of epistaxis, or in
layman’s terms a nosebleed, this could be
due to many things. Often the cause is either
blunt trauma to the nose or a bacterial or fungal
infection of the upper airways and nasal cavity.
If it persists it is best to take your dog to your vet
for further tests as the cause could be something
more serious. Any condition that decreases the
blood’s ability to clot can result in a nosebleed.
This includes liver disease, tick-borne diseases like
ehrlichiosis and some cancers, to name a few. If
your dog happens to sniff a grass seed or any other

foreign body up his nose by accident, his nose
might come off second best.
You can attempt first aid at home. Firstly, keep
your dog calm. Secondly, try to place some ice
wrapped in a damp cloth over the bridge of his
nose. This will decrease the blood pressure and
help constrict the blood vessels in the nose to
hopefully stop the nosebleed. If it persists you
should definitely pay your vet a visit so that the
necessary tests can be done and correct treatment
be given.

Choosing a healthy mouse
When you choose your new pet mouse,
look out for these signs that he is as healthy
as possible:

  • The mouse is energetic and full of life.

  • Eyes are bright and shiny.

  • The coat is smooth and clean.

  • No discharge near the nose, and the mouth
and anal area should be clean.
