Voting For Ethnic Democracy?

xceeding all expectations and opinion polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has attained a

thumping victory to gain power for the consecutive second term. The Hindu right-wing front has not

only attained simple majority but drastically expanded its vote and seat share by effectively overcom-

ing the anti-incumbency and political polarisation against it. BJP has secured 303 seats with 37.36%

of votes polled, marking a significant improvement from last election’s 282 seats and 31% votes. As

BJP is an integral part of the transformative project of Hindutva, which seeks to replace our liberal

secular democracy with its idea of Hindu Rashtra, this election result has enormous consequences on

Indian Elections 2019
