are highly collectible. A couple have come to
auction over the past few years that have sold
really well. This one was done in 1916 toward
the end of Paxson’s career.”
There also will be a collection of Western
illustrations coming to market. Nicklas shares,
“We have a couple of really nice pieces by
Frank McCarthy; an Outdoor Life cover piece
from 1942 by Joseph Kernan; and works
by [W.H.D.] Koerner and Guy Diehl, who
illustrated a lot of the old Western books
including those by Louis L’Amour.”
Contemporary works arriving at auction
include Andy Thomas’ Gunfight at Long


Branch Saloon (est. $25/35,000) that depicts
a gunfight between “Cockeyed” Frank Loving
and Levi Richardson and a work by Kyle
Polzin titled Weathered Iron from the Joe
& Doris Hinton Collection of Washington,
Texas, that has a presale estimate of $15,000
to $25,000. Also for the sale Coeur d’Alene
Galleries will present around a dozen works
by emerging artists such as Abigail Gutting,
Colt Idol and Ken Yarus. “We feel it is
important to give these guys an outlet, and we
think they have a bright future,” says Nicklas.
“We’re trying to get them in the public eye a
little bit.”
