JOANA VASCONCELOS
Artist
Exuberantly coloured and monumental in
scale, Vasconcelos’ sculptures of day-to-day
objects are sly critiques of consumerist
culture. This month’s Artist’s Palate (page
178) sees her Fruit Cake – normally made
from plastic sand moulds overlaying a
stainless steel frame – translated into edible
form. Vasconcelos has been gearing up
for her new show at Edinburgh’s Jupiter
Artland, which includes a swimming pool
installation with hand-painted Portuguese
tiles, a pool house and sculptural objects.

LEANDRO FARINA
Photographer
Renowned for his eye for detail, meticulous
use of light and thoughtful still-life
compositions, Canada-born photographer
Farina has this month turned his lens
on collections of wire chairs (page 144),
transforming the ‘nearly invisible designs
into graphic silhouettes’. A Wallpaper*
stalwart, Farina is based between London
and New York and works with editorial
and commercial clients including Dunhill,
British Airways and Swarovski.

JOHN SHORT
Photographer
We’ve come to rely on Short for his ceaseless
commitment in perfecting a Wallpaper*
story and he certainly put in the time this
month. ‘Stylist Laura Fulmine and I entered
a world of curves for three months in our
research for the shoot,’ he says of our Space
story (page 164), which celebrates the
circular. ‘The shoot has definitely changed
the way I look at a straight line.’ The
photographer is currently busy working
on a book project ‘of an arboreal nature’.

LAURA FULMINE
Stylist
Researching this month’s exquisitely curvy
Space story (page 164), Fulmine found
inspiration in one of her favourite buildings,
Pierre Cardin’s Bubble Palace on the French
Riviera. ‘Its architect, Antti Lovag, once
said he considered the straight line to be an
aggression against nature, and I definitely
came round to his way of thinking,’ says the
London-based stylist, who started her career
working for fashion designers Luella Bartley
and Giles Deacon, and is currently working
on a boutique hotel project.

GIOVANNA DUNMALL
Writer
A British-Italian writer based in London,
Dunmall travelled east for us, heading
to Romania to discover the work of local
craftspeople in collaboration with designers
Nadja Zerunian and Peter Weisz (page 084).
‘My trip was eye-opening,’ she says. ‘I learnt
about spectacular crafts and skills that
have been carried out by Romanian artisans
for centuries but are often undervalued and
so are at risk. What I came away with was
a feeling that regular and constant support
is key, not big, flamboyant, one-off projects.’

MARINA CASHDAN
Writer
Based in Brooklyn, Cashdan is head of
editorial content at Artsy, an art discovery
platform for collectors and artists. For
Wallpaper* this month, she interviewed
fellow New Yorker Roni Horn in her
rural studio (page 066). ‘It felt strangely
satisfying to see that the environment
I had imagined Horn’s work being created in
was so similar to her actual surrounding –
a quiet and isolated piece of land in upstate
New York,’ says Cashdan.
