BORN AGAIN
French lighting manufacturer DCW
Éditions has a knack for unearthing
era-defining designs of the past
and reworking them beautifully for
a modern world. Among its latest
launches are some of the minimalist
masterpieces of midcentury lighting
designer Jacques Biny. Modest,
pared-back, functional yet refined
forms were his signature, brilliantly
exemplified by his ‘Box’ lights, created
in 1958. DCW has tweaked the original
technologies of the ‘Box’, adding
integrated, removable LED technology
and making the lamp’s original fins
adjustable, allowing light to be steered
in different directions. The ‘Biny’ lamp
comes in table (pictured right) or wall
form, with customisable colour
options, and it has also been combined
with the ‘Biny Spot’ to create a new
piece, ‘Biny Bedside’.

LOOK
SMART
A new era of tech-driven
grooming is a click away
When a prototype for the world’s first
smart hairbrush launched in 2017, it
seemed like a new era of tech-driven,
diagnostic grooming was dawning.
The hairbrush is still in development,
but it promises to become a battery-
fuelled detangler using an inbuilt
microphone to collect data about
split ends and frizziness, conductivity
sensors to assess how dry hair is, and
technology to measure brushing force.
Health and beauty devices designed to
diagnose without human intervention
is an evolving area, but we are looking
forward to integrating the first
wearable UV sensor, an app-supported
toothbrush by Dentii, posture trackers
and smart scales into our lives.
