companies as well. This results in a huge
drain of resources from the Country.

Can pesticides be washed off from food?
Pesticides are chemicals used to protect
crops against insects, weeds, fungi and
other pests. They are toxic to humans and
the environment and have both acute and
chronic health effects. Generally, just a
regular rinsing does not eliminate pesticides.
Peeling of the vegetables or fruit may be
suggested but with that, we may have to let
go of essential nutrients in the bin. The best
approach is to thoroughly wash and scrub
all the products or buy organic whenever
possible.

Why should we shift to Organic Foods?
Organics foods are a win-win for all.
Consumers benefit from the nutritious
food which is free of chemicals and farmers
benefit from the enhanced soil quality,
multiple harvests in a season and freedom
from dependency on foreign companies for
fertilisers and pesticides. Benefits of organic
foods are countless. Due to nil interaction
with harmful chemicals, they do not have
side-effects and have high antioxidant levels.
Organic food also tastes better and fresh.
Shifting to organic foods can be good for the
country’s economy as well, as the farmers
dependency on GMO seeds, fertilizers
and chemicals reduces and so his need of
loans. The fertility of the soil increases when
practiced on a longer run, which makes him
grow multiple crops as per the season.

Why is organic food often more
expensive?
The real questions to be asked are – Why is
non-healthy, chemical ridden food cheaper?
What are the long term effects of these
foods? And do we end up paying much more

in medical bills as a result?

Organic food is more labour intensive since
the farmers do not use chemicals for easier
growth of the crops. Organic farms tend to
be smaller than conventional farms, which
means fixed costs and overhead must be
distributed across smaller produce volume.
Organic food does not have any preservatives
added to them and hence the farm-to-fork
cycle time is very less. The yield may not be
as high as GMO crops. All this adds to the
cost of the product. Efforts are being made
at various levels by the Art of Living to teach
farmers natural and sustainable Zero Budget
farming. Already 15550 farmers have been
trained and approximately 1800 acres have
been brought under organic cultivation.

In recent times, many Government schemes
have helped in reducing the price of Organic
Food. Improved infrastructure such as Cold
Storage Plants and better connectivity
with cities has helped to reduce wastage
of organically grown crops. Ultimately it
will depend upon the consumers to bring
down the prices even further. An increase
in demand for Organic Food will compel the
suppliers to eliminate any bottlenecks on
the supply side.
