My apprehensions weren’t

based on the fact that

it was a gay character,

but for the reason that

I had played a homosexual

twice before, and did not

want to be repetitive as an

artist. However, as soon

as I read the script, I had

decided that only I will

play the role.

HOW DID YOU GET OVER THE

FACT THAT YOU COULD HAVE

BEEN TYPECAST?

I had to remind myself that typecasting is

a disease of people who lack vision or

imagination. At the end of the day, I have done

about 30 projects, and of those if four of the

characters are gay, it’s no big deal. Even if the

number was seven, it wouldn’t have been a reason

for worry. In fact, what Made In Heaven is trying to

do is normalise such divisions in our minds.

WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE

CHARACTER IN THE SERIES?

The character graph of Vinay Pathak’s part,

Mr Gupta, is superb. Kalki Koechlin’s role,

Faiza, is another favourite, since it is grey

and complicated. I particularly admire her

scenes with the therapist; they have

a sense of vulnerability.

with Tara (played

Dhulipala) in the

How do you

interpret it?

The two of them (Karan

and Tara) understand

each other without

having to spell out

anything. They don’t

even talk to each other

in detail about the

goings-on in their lives,

but give each other

unconditional support.

What’s next?
