29 JUNE - 1 JULY
FIESTA SAN PEDRO, PORTUGUESE SETTLEMENT
Malacca
The Feast day of St. Peter, the patron saint of
fishermen. The Portuguese Settlement is home
to many descendants of Portuguese fishing
families in the state. On 29 June, they celebrate
High Mass in the Settlement church in honour of
the saint when evening falls. Following the Mass,
the statue of the saint is carried in a procession
around, and the priest blesses the fishing boats.
At night, there are live band performances
and Eurasian dances on show. Some boats are
decorated for the occasion with sketches and
paintings of Biblical figurines. The blessing of
the boats indicates the fishermen’s hope for a
bountiful catch for the year ahead.
