12 KERRANG!

Throes were slower, sludgier, and
steeped in a previously untapped
bleakness compared to what had
come before. Ask Throes what
fuels their desolate worldview and
Bryce will simply say “existence”,
with a mirthless chuckle.
“Some art is a reflection of
something
beautiful or
sad,” Morgan
elaborates, but
only a little.
“We’ve always
gravitated
towards the
nihilistic and
darker side.”
They Never
Spoke, from
their new In
The Hands Of An Angry God
album, fulfils that promise, as
Tyler laments the loss of a family
member. Yet amid the album’s
undertow, the song Disillusion
lifts Throes out of the mire into

more expansive territory. Both
Tyler and Morgan cite it as a
mutual favourite, praising Phil’s
mesmerising vocal performance.
“Disillusion was so out of my
comfort zone and it took a lot
for me to trust Phil’s instincts,”
says Morgan. “I was so
impressed. I didn’t know we
could write music like that!”
Throes may be a taciturn
bunch, with a gruffness that
reflects the hard road they’ve
travelled, but they all seem
pleased with the destination.
“This is the closest to what
I’ve wanted to do musically all
my life,” muses Tyler, as Bryce
and Morgan murmur their
agreement. “It’s finally something
I’m genuinely proud of.”
After all that misery, it’s a
change for the better, then.

C

hange is often painful. Throes
bassist Bryce Kresge and drummer
Morgan Mechling know this all too
well. It started with a long drive
home to Boise, Idaho, after the acrimonious
collapse of their old band Bone Dance.
“We broke up during a tour and drove
36 hours straight home,” says Bryce.
“It was a quiet ride.”
But, as the miles
and months passed
by, Morgan believed
there was unfinished
business left.
“I really wanted
to keep playing with
some of the guys,
because we had
a good dynamic,”
adds Morgan. “I didn’t
want to let that go, so
I bugged them ’til we figured something out.”
Tentatively, Bryce and Morgan reconvened
with Bone Dance guitarists Phil Davis and
Kasey Richardson to put the axe to the
grindstone. Recruiting longtime friend and
gnarly vocalist Tyler Squire, the nascent
