M

e and a couple of mates
went away last weekend.
But, what was supposed
to be a relaxing break
from the pit of course resulted in us
stomping around to Metallica, eating
mountains of beef and accidentally
destroying the PA system of the bar
we were in as I desperately tried to
connect my aux cable to it.
It was worth it so I could play everyone
the new Big Spring tune, Reset. I know,
ever the broadcaster eh? But seriously,
have you heard it? It bangs. Quiet Lions
are also putting out more new music, and
it’s like an odyssey for
your ears. So, yeah,
the summer is here,
and I’ve got a feeling
that it’s going to be
a season of amazing
sounds, and probably
a few too many beers.
But let’s talk
about band names,
shall we? In among
folk dropping
vowels, chucking in
numbers, or being
all controversial
about it and calling
themselves something
that no-one will ever
be able to say on the
radio, sometimes it’s
refreshing to have
someone just tell it
like it is. When two
guys called John
started their punk
band, it probably
took them all of zero
seconds to decide on
their band name. The
Crystal Palace duo
sound like someone is
driving a train through
your brain, and their
tune Future Thinker
smashes through
your skull with such
an energetic, chaotic
force that it makes
you feel a bit broken.
From London to
LA now for Tennis
System, a band that I
just cannot get enough
of on my show. Their

almost shoegazey take on grunge is
fascinating and should sound completely
contrived, but magically doesn’t for some
reason. Songs like Crushing and latest
single Shelf Life take you on a series of
deliciously dark adventures. Look out for
their new album Lovesick, coming soon.
I was instantly drawn to Pleiades
(pronounced ‘Plea-uh-deez – I had to
ask) when I heard their EP All At Your
Mercy. It opens with an almost post-
rock-esque, beautiful clatter, before
dropping you headlong into a lift shaft of
black metal (while also being not black
metal at all). Their single Ultra takes
the feeling of utter
emotive desperation
to an even realer
place via a much-
needed comment
on humanity’s
desensitisation
to violence in the
modern age. It’s a
song inspired by the
tragedy that took
place at Grenfell
Tower and the horrific
lack of meaningful
action taken by our
government since.
You need to listen to
it immediately.
There’s a new
wave of spectacular,
cinematic rock
emerging at the
moment, and the
latest bunch are
Sweden’s 4K, ultra-HD,
widescreen Solence.
The band started out
doing covers, before
finding their giant-like
stride with massive
tunes like Empire Of
The Sun. Hear them
on my show basically
every week, and just
bask in their glorious,
panoramic sound.
