T

he Historic Dockyard at Chatham in
Kent, was one of the Royal Navy’s
main facilities for four hundred years
until it closed in 1984. Ownership was then
transferred to the Chatham Historic
Dockyard Trust to re purpose the site,
opening it up as a visitor attraction, as well
as including places where people can live and
learn. The core of the 80 acre site, houses over
100 buildings and structures dating from the
Georgian and Victorian periods, to present
day new builds.
The Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust,
SEEDA and the Local Council decided to
develop the old Joiners Shop into a hub for
creative businesses to be based. Many of the
building’s remarkable original features were
preserved and incorporated into the new
design. As part of the refurbishment,
Kingswood Construction contacted
Selectaglaze to provide a solution to augment
the thermal insulation of the existing single
glazed timber windows in the reception,

office spaces and communal facilities; some
of which had to be 30 minute fire rated. A
total of 85 units were installed.
In spring 2018, Selectaglaze worked on the
offices of the Chatham Historic Dockyard
Trust, which is situated on the first floor of
the Fitted Rigging House. 25 units were
installed, again the Series 20 specified for the
majority of openings. The large loop hole

doors in the office that cannot be removed
due to the buildings Listed status also
required secondary glazing; so three Series 41
double side hung no threshold casement units
were installed on door frames to improve
thermal retention.
Overall, facilities manager Nigel Howard
who has seen much of the redevelopment of
the Historic Dockyard Chatham has been
thoroughly impressed with the consistent
quality of Selectaglaze systems throughout
the years. Historic Dockyard Chatham won
the ‘Best major regeneration of a Historic
Building’ award at the Historic England
Angel Awards in November 2018.
Established in 1966 and Royal Warrant
Holder since 2004, Selectaglaze has a
wealth of experience working on many
building types, from new build to Grade I
Listed buildings.

All of a Twitter
A unique design of ventilation grille from Gilberts Blackpoolhas
helped Twitter achieve its first platinum level LEED (leadership in
energy & environmental design) award in the world. The social media
brand’s European, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) headquarters in
Cumberland Place, Dublin, is Twitter’s biggest office outside the US.
The six storey, 1970s building has been refurbished in partnership
with its owners Hibernia REIT to be as eco-friendly as possible. Key
elements of the eco refurbishment, designed by MCA architects, have
been green roofs, optimised use of glazing, and an energy efficient heat
recovery ventilation system. The ventilation throughout uses Gilberts’
circular GSFE swirl diffusers with a supplementary coanda plate
integrated into exposed building services, supplied by Keane
Environmental. Gilberts’ circular GSF fixed swirl diffuser –
a patented design – uses radial vanes behind a perforated face to allow
the introduction of high levels of air horizontally across the ceiling
with rapid entrainment and intermixing delivering an omni directional
discharge with high room induction.

Kalwall rockets away
Aerospace company Blue Origin’s vast new 70,000 square metre
factory in Kennedy Space Centre's Exploration Park in Florida is now
manufacturing ‘Glenn’ rockets for launches at Cape Canaveral 10 miles
away. Owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, the Blue Origin building
features specially-designed Kalwall®translucent cladding which has
been used across the top of the building in a clerestory design.
Manufactured with a bespoke face sheet to match the corporate colour
scheme, 100’s square metres of Kalwall transmits high quality diffused
daylight into the structure whilst also solving the twin requirements
of privacy and security. Interestingly, the use of a bespoke coloured
face sheet does not affect the quality of light internally. Kalwall offers
complete line-of-sight protection, maintaining privacy for building
occupants and operations while throwing diffused daylighting deep
into the interior space. It also eliminates shadows and glare and the
stark contrasts of light and shade making it safer for within. The
system also enhances simplicity in external design by negating the need
for blinds, curtains or solar control.
