Stunning tiling of a 19thCentury mansion in the gateway to the Highlands
Featuring more than 500m^2 of tiling on three floors and seven bathrooms, The Gart is a fabulous example of
a high quality, modern tiling, completed despite a challenging design brief from the project’s artist owner.
Valued at £1.75 million, the property required tiling of the highest order with expert craftsmanship to fulfil a
challenging design brief that incorporated an array of tile types and intricate designs on challenging substrates.
Because the substrate was tongue and groove floor boards, potential issues included weight loading, height
build-up, deflection and lateral movement in the floor. To combat these potential issue and to ensure the luxury
tiles did not experience any failures, BALRapid-Mat lightweight uncoupling mat was installed throughout to
protect the tiling but also add minimal height to the floors. All floor tiles were tiled with BAL Rapid
Flex-One, flexible rapid-setting adhesive, while wall tiles were tiled with BAL Single Part Flexible. All the tiling
was grouted in BAL Micromax2 flexible wall and floor grout. “I was delighted to use BAL throughout the
project, as it my trusted tiling-system partner,” said Wesley Geraghty from Atlas Tiling contractors.

One of the UK’s most popular living museums is using its newest attraction to deliver best practice in
accessibility, and truly open its doors to everyone. With a £10.9million grant from The National Lottery
Heritage Fund, Beamish is able to undertake its Remaking Beamish project, which includes a 1950s Town at
the Co Durham site. Closomat –one of the UK’s leading providers of assisted accessible toilets –has supplied
and installed the Changing Places therein, which enables people who need help – be it in the form of people
and/or equipment –to maintain toilet hygiene, Wendy Wilshere, Beamish’s Volunteer & Access Co-Ordinator,
said: “These fantastic facilities will make a massive difference for visitors who need them, and we are delighted
and proud to offer them in our new 1950s welfare hall at Beamish.” The Changing Places is installed in the
welfare hall – the first building to be opened to visitors in The 1950s Town. In addition, Beamish has gone
beyond, achieving an exemplar facility according to British Standards by including a shower, and choosing a
wash & dry toilet (a Closomat Palma Vita WC) in place of a conventional lavatory.
