A shed makeover warms up the garden

thanks to a new coat of paint, a few vintage projects,

and an infusion of blooms in shades of turmeric,

ginger, and cayenne.

ometimes a garden simply needs a new

recipe—something to get the energy fl owing

and infuse the view with toasty, enticing

colors. This unremarkable 8×10-foot kit shed

with subdued brown paint and green trim blended with

the surrounding foliage and almost disappeared into

the worn late-season garden. Well, we fi xed that!

A new coat of paint in a deep saffron hue edged with

clean white made the shed an instant focal point in

the garden and certainly less workaday. An infusion of

seasonal blooms and foliage—some perennial, some

annual—echoes the spicy shed color. Black-eyed Susan

(Rudbeckia hirta ‘Denver Daisy’), celosia, amaranth,

ornamental peppers, tall sedum, and mums sprinkle

the warm colors of a spice rack into the late-summer

garden. Tall grasses, including northern sea oats

(Chasmanthium latifolium), and kales with colorful

ruffl es add texture and layers to the plantings.

For a fi nal dash of fl avor, we garnished the shed

and surrounding garden with simple DIY projects

created from fi nds at a local fl ea market. A vintage

metal cracker box became a cheery birdhouse mounted
