through a crabapple tree.
Silky seed heads resembling
towhead, mop-top wigs
will appear after fl owers
fade. Mingling with the
crabapple’s red fruit in early
fall, the seed heads last all
the way through December.
BOTTOM RIGHT Michael’s
admiration for the English
garden Great Dixter led
him to grow perennial
‘Capenoch Star’ sunfl ower,
which was cultivated there.
Like most sunfl owers it
soars skyward, but stems
are tightly clustered and
hold up even in New
Hampshire’s snowy winters.
‘August Flame’ daylily
harmonizes with red petals
and glowing yellow throats.
Flowers and foliage in hues
of cool purple—Verbena
bonariensis, Gomphrena
‘All Around Purple’,
and perilla—make the
combination sing.
BELOW Boxwood balls
and yew hedges require
seasonal shaping but do not
otherwise require much of
Michael’s time considering
their signifi cant visual effect.
