Country Gardens – July 2019

(Nandana) #1
ABOVE Two azure
benches sit on a bluestone
patio aligned with French
doors to the Gordons’
walk-out basement. The
little garden room marks
the transition to the
woodland garden just a
few steps down.

TOP RIGHT Even with
his optometry practice,
Michael maintains his
garden himself. “I’ve
gotten very effi cient,”
he says.

MIDDLE RIGHT Although
the woodland garden
seems different from the
upper and lower gardens,
shaped boxwoods and
stone steps from the patio
provide design continuity.

BOTTOM RIGHT

When Michael found
a stowaway growing
with another plant he
bought, he potted it
and was pleased to
discover the seedling was
Himalayan horse-gentian
(Triosteum himalayanum),
a perennial that thrives
in his woodland garden.
Clusters of red fruit
appear in late summer
amid hairy green leaves.

The woodland garden is a less-structured,
shaded, sloping space at the lowest level of
the property.
