straight from the door to the sidewalk was replaced with a path from the door to the
driveway. Embracing the new path with an undulating white picket fence and flowerbeds
helps soften the home’s boxy architecture and bring out its charming character.

issues until, one freezing January day, she went to the library to look in the
gardening section for guidance and inspiration.
“In one of the books, I came across this landscape plan and I thought, That
is it, that is exactly my house,” Margaret says. “It’s got a prominent roof and
it showed this design of how putting in an asymmetrical white picket fence
connects the roofline to the yard, making the yard look bigger. That’s it!”
With design direction in hand, Margaret knew where to start. “I contacted a
contractor to take out the straight walkway and put in a new path,” Margaret says.
“Then the next spring I had a trusted handyman create the white picket fence

look I wanted.” The new path and fence frame the entryway, embracing the
house and adding cottage charm.
