F
lying can wreak havoc on your skin,
leaving you looking and feeling less-than-
refreshed on landing. “Flying can cause
swelling, dehydration and water
retention,” says aesthetic doctor Maryam
Zamani, founder of skincare range
MZ Skin. Besides resisting alcohol, fizzy drinks and salty
snacks on-board – sip water instead and move around
the cabin – Maryam’s beauty tips will help you arrive for
your holiday with a glow.
QBefore applying any hydrating skincare products, it’s
important to cleanse. “I don’t recommend putting
anything on top of make-up as it will not penetrate the
skin,” says Maryam. “Instead, it will sit on top of debris
and make-up and may even increase skin sensitivity or
encourage blemishes.” If you don’t get the chance to
take your make-up off before you board, hello! loves
This Works In Transit No Traces cotton cleansing pads,
£18; visit thisworks.com. Infused with rosewater and
water mint, they cut through waterproof mascara yet
are gentle enough to use all over your face and neck.
Follow up with Vichy Mineral 89 Serum, £22, from
feelunique.com. It sinks into skin in seconds and will
help protect it from pollutants – around 50% of the air
in a plane cabin is recirculated.
QTo counteract fluid retention, pop the MZ Skin Tone
& Lift Germanium Contouring Facial Roller, £59 (visit
mzskin.com), into your bag. Run it over your face and its
acupressure pods apply light pressure, designed to boost
circulation, reduce puffiness and increase radiance.
QLow humidity can dry your skin. “Today’s airplanes
have very low cabin humidity, usually ranging from
5-15%,” says Maryam. “We’re accustomed to more like
50% in our homes.” Try discreet hydrating eye patches,
such as Elemis Pro-Collagen Hydra-Gel Eye Masks,
£50.50 for six (visit elemis.com), and a hydrating lip
balm – we love Clarins Hydra-Essential Moisture
Replenishing Lip Balm, £19.50; visit clarins.co.uk. And
just before landing, apply NYX Bare With Me
Hydrating Jelly Primer, £15; visit nyxcosmetics.co.uk.
The water-based formula softens the appearance of
pores and is the perfect base for make-up.
QIf you’re on a long-haul trip, you need greater
protection. Try Lanolips Face Base The Aussie Flyer,
£20; visit net-a-porter.com. Slather on a thick layer and
wipe it off after ten minutes for dewy, hydrated skin.
Also, top up your moisture levels with Caudalie Beauty
Elixir Limited Edition 30ml, £12; visit caudalie.com.
QFinally, you may not be on the beach, but you should
wear sun cream on a flight. “Ultraviolet radiation at
that altitude is more damaging to skin than when
you’re on the ground, especially if you have a window
seat,” says Maryam. “SPF is a must.” BareMinerals
